Office 365 - Troubleshooting Repeating Login Prompts and errors "We Weren't able to activate Office. Please try again later."

We just had an unusual situation where a few workstations at a customer couldn't connect to their Office 365 and no it wasn't licensing but we couldn't activate.  The issue like many customers are facing are the lingering objects from old operating systems and the challenges of the personal login credentials vs the business credentials.  We followed all the standard troubleshooting of removing the outlook profile and reinstalling Office 365 multiple times but no success.  The cure ended up being the following:

Issues Encountered:

Unable to recreate an outlook profile.

Constant login prompts.

Unable to activate Office 365 (Verified active license)

Removed the following registry keys from regedit (running as administrator)

  • ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities’
  • Delete all keys underneath (or delete keys of affected users)
  • Navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Profiles’
  • Delete all keys underneath (or delete keys of affected users)
  • Close regedit
  • Relaunch Office app
Once we removed the values above we were able to activate office and create an outlook profile with zero issues.

*  Please follow the typical troubleshooting as directed by Microsoft.  Always make a backup of any modified keys and retain the values in case of any problems.  The resolution above is not a first attempt to resolve the issue and would always recommend opening a support case if login challenges are occurring as a larger issue may exist.
